DIY Sump Pump Maintenance

To keep your sump pump installation working well, a little routine maintenance can go a long way. If you aren’t sure that you’re up to it, one of our professional Calgary plumbing technicians will be able to help with major maintenance and cleaning. In the meantime, here are some easy steps that you can take to make sure that your sump pump installation works best.

  • Pour a bucket of water down the sump pump pit in your basement. If the pump begins working, you should be fine during the next rain season. Otherwise, you may have to perform some basic maintenance or have some of our Calgary plumbing experts come check it out.
  • Disconnect the power supply before removing your sump pump installation. Pull the sump pump out of its pit and look under the check water valve. You may have to remove rubbish that could be affecting its efficiency.
  • Using your owner’s manual, check for possible problems with your sump pump installation. It may need lubrication or the pump inlet screen to be cleaned (use a wire brush for this!). If the check water valve is clogged or damaged, you may need to replace it or have a Calgary plumbing professional come out to unblock it.
  • Take care to reconnect the sump pump correctly, reconnecting the valve to the pipe and testing it once more to see if it works.

This process is rather simple and can keep you safe from emergencies during heavy rainfall. If you aren’t sure where your owner’s manual is or don’t feel comfortable performing sump pump maintenance yourself, one of our Calgary plumbing professionals can come to check it out for you. Just give us a call and we’ll bring our state-of-the-art equipment and expert skill to your aid!
