Spring Plumbing Tips for Calgary

It’s that time of year again, when the snow melts away and the world is renewed. While it might seem like your house will adjust itself to the new weather, the changing of seasons has been responsible for many problems with plumbing in Calgary. It turns out, though, that there are some things you can do to ease the transition! Take a look at some of these spring plumbing tips for some helpful hints.

Some basic knowledge about plumbing in Calgary: When pipes are cold, they contract, and when they heat up, they expand. This causes cracks and leaks to form over time, especially during the winter and early spring. This problem is never more apparent than when it affects the bathroom. To easily check the toilet for leaks, try this: put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If the water in the bowl turns colored within half an hour, you likely have a leak!

Some other things to check include the flush handle. Is it responding properly? If the flush hesitates, or if you have to “jiggle” the handle, this might point to a bigger problem. In the bathroom and the kitchen, you should take a close look at faucets to check for leaks and drips. Repairing these things will save water—and save you money.

Another way to save energy is to check your water heater’s preset temperature. The hot water should be set no higher than 120 degrees to save energy and prevent burns. If your water heater is over 15 years old, it might be time to consider a replacement. Newer models are much more energy efficient!
